The California Business Insurance Guide
Business insurance in California comes down to three questions: what the law requires you to carry, what your contracts and landlord require, and what you'd struggle to pay for yourself if it went wrong.
This guide collects every TSM article on those questions, grouped so you can start where you are. If you'd rather talk it through, TSM is an independent agency in Modesto and Redding, and we compare carriers for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to essential California commercial insurance rules.
What business insurance is required by law in California?
Workers' compensation is required as soon as you have an employee (Labor Code §3700). Vehicles you own need at least the state's auto liability insurance, and some licensed trades and professions carry their own requirements, such as the CSLB contractor bond. Most other coverage is required by contracts, leases and lenders rather than by statute. California business insurance laws covers the detail.
What's the minimum coverage a small business should carry?
For most small businesses, general liability and property, often bundled as a BOP, plus workers' comp once you hire. Your industry, vehicles and contracts add to that. Start with what a small business actually needs.
Is an independent agent cheaper than buying direct?
Not automatically, but an independent agent can quote several carriers at once and place you where your class of business is priced best. If you're with another agent now, see how to switch business insurance agents.
How often should I review my business insurance?
At least once a year before renewal, and whenever you hire, add a vehicle, sign a lease or take on a contract with insurance requirements. Use the annual insurance review checklist.
